Dr. Roth, a board certified urologist, received his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. His urology residency was under the direction of Dr. R. Keith Waterhouse at Downstate Medical Center-Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he competed in a National Chief Resident examination, finishing in the top 10% in the Country. Dr. Roth completed both portions of the American Board of Urology qualifying examination, and was certified by the American Board of Urology in, both Adult and Pediatric Urology in 1982.
In addition to the standard Urology training, including residency training in Surgery at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, Dr. Roth has taken post graduate training in Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy at the Northern California Kidney Stone Center in Los Gatos, California, been trained in Percutaneous kidney surgery and endoscopic surgical technics. Personal, one on one training, was received from Dr. Arthur Smith, one of the pioneers in the field, at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park New York. Training in Laser surgical technics was taken at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Dr. Roth is trained in Laser prostate coagulation and vaporization technics, bladder tumor vaporization, laser stone therapy among others. Dr. Roth has received training in thermal treatment of BPH using radio frequency therapy and microwave therapy (TUNA/Prosteva and TUMT respectively). At the University of California San Diego, Dr. Roth received training in microsurgical surgical technic, which is used in vasectomy reversal procedures. Dr. Roth is on the panel of physicians listed by the Interstitial Cystitis Association of America, and has participated in, and run, seminars for the Association.
In sharing his knowledge of the field of Urology, Dr. Roth has held the position of instructor in Urology at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in New York. As a member of the Society for Office Based Surgeons (now the American Society of Outpatient Surgeons), Dr. Roth served as a lecturer on office based surgical technics. He has appeared on television and radio programs as an expert in Urological topics, and has offered community seminars in the field of Urology.
In addition to his specialty training in Urology and Surgery and in keeping with his philosophy that the doctor treats the whole patient, not just body parts, Dr. Roth has taken specialty training in Internal Medicine (with an emphasis on cardiology) at Mount Sinai Hospital of Miami Beach. He has had specialty training in Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas, and served as a Flight Surgeon for the United States Air Force. Though he limits his practice to Urology, these additional trainings have and do provide the doctor with an additional and unique viewpoint and perspective when dealing with his urology patients.
Dr. Roth has maintained a private practice in the Alameda/Contra Costa area since 1976. He has maintained the philosophy that, in addition to treating specific ailments of the genitourinary system, it is his responsibility to teach his patients about their health and ways in which they may protect it. The doctor serves his patients, not the insurance companies, employers or other third party payors.
